"Mind Children: The Future of Robot and Human Intelligence", Hans Moravec

A dizzying display of intellect and wild imaginings by Moravec, a world-class roboticist who has himself developed clever beasts . . . Undeniably, Moravec comes across as a highly knowledgeable and creative talent-which is just what the field needs" - Kirkus Reviews.

"Flesh and Machines: How Robots Will Change Us", Rodney Brooks

Are we really on the brink of having robots to mop our floors, do our dishes, mow our lawns, and clean our windows? And are researchers that close to creating robots that can think, feel, repair themselves, and even reproduce?

"Natural-Born Cyborgs: Minds, Technologies, and the Future of Human Intelligence", Andy Clark

From Robocop to the Terminator to Eve 8, no image better captures our deepest fears about technology than the cyborg, the person who is both flesh and metal, brain and electronics. But philosopher and cognitive scientist Andy Clark sees it differently. Cyborgs, he writes, are not something to be feared--we already are cyborgs.

"Citizen Cyborg: Why Democratic Societies Must Respond to the Redesigned Human of the Future", James Hughes

A provocative work by medical ethicist James Hughes, Citizen Cyborg argues that technologies pushing the boundaries of humanness can radically improve our quality of life if they are controlled democratically. Hughes challenges both the technophobia of Leon Kass and Francis Fukuyama and the unchecked enthusiasm of others for limitless human enhancement. He argues instead for a third way, "democratic transhumanism," by asking the question destined to become a fundamental issue of the twenty-first century: How can we use new cybernetic and biomedical technologies to make life better for everyone? These technologies hold great promise, but they also pose profound challenges to our health, our culture, and our liberal democratic political system. By allowing humans to become more than human - "posthuman" or "transhuman" - the new technologies will require new answers for the enduring issues of liberty and the common good. What limits should we place on the freedom of people to control their own bodies? Who should own genes and other living things? Which technologies should be mandatory, which voluntary, and which forbidden? For answers to these challenges, Citizen Cyborg proposes a radical return to a faith in the resilience of our democratic institutions.

"More Than Human: Embracing the Promise of Biological Enhancement", Ramez Naam

Distilling the most radical accomplishments being made in labs around the world, including gene therapy, genetic engineering, life extension, brain-computer interfaces, and cloning, More Than Human offers an exciting tour of the impact biotechnology will have on our lives. Throughout this remarkable trip, author Ramez Naam shares an impassioned vision for the future with revealing insight into the ethical dilemmas posed by twenty-first-century science. Encouraging us to celebrate rather than fear these innovations, Naam incisively separates fact from myth, arguing that these much-maligned technologies have the power to transform the human race for the better, so long as individuals and families are left free to decide how and if to use them.

"Robo Sapiens: Evolution of a New Species", Peter Menzel & Faith D'Aluisio

Around the world, scientists and engineers are participating in a high-stakes race to build the first intelligent robot. Many robots already exist -- automobile factories are full of them. But the new generation of robots will be something else: smart machines that act like living creatures. When they are brought into existence, science fiction will have become fact. What will happen then? With our prosthetic limbs, titanium hips, and artificial eyes, we are already beginning to resemble our machines. Equally important, our machines are beginning to resemble us. Robots already walk, talk, and dance; they can react to our facial expressions and obey verbal commands. When they take the next step and become fully autonomous, what will they do? Will we be partners or rivals? Could we meld into a single species -- Robo sapiens? In Robo sapiens, Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio present the next generation of intelligent robots and their makers. Accompanying brilliant photographs of more than one hundred robots is an account of the little-known, yet vitally important scientific competition to build an autonomous robot. Containing extensive interviews with robotics pioneers, anecdotal "field notes" with behind-the-scenes information, and easy-to-understand technical data about the machines, Robo sapiens is a field guide to our mechanical future.

"Beyond Humanity: Cyberevolution and Future Minds", Gregory Paul, Earl Cox

This volume discusses the implications of teaching our computers and robots to think. The authors, a paleontologist and an artificial intelligence guru, team up to present some of the sociological, theological, and scientific issues that we will face in the 21st century. Over 150 years ago Darwin realized that evolutionary change is the driving force in our universe. The text considers how Darwin failed to appreciate how fundamentally the evolution of science and technology will change not only our world, but our very minds - and how soon it may happen.

"Unbounding the Future: The Nanotechnology Revolution", Eric Drexler

Organized as a set of self-tests, Are You a Transhuman? attempts to gauge the future prospects of your mindset and lifestyle. The questions are mostly phrased in a way that gives away the author's bias, and the sections that follow each battery of questions clarify his position, if not his reasoning. For all this book was to stand for, it has not aged well. As a futurist text, it fails miserably. The author's obsession with helicopters as the vehicle of the future is his monkey trap. He condescends and insults while attempting to preach open-mindedness. In particular his very unscientific stand against eating meat is just confusing. Even so, this is an interesting historical text in the study of transhumanism.
